What to Wear for a JPG Portrait Session

Considering a portrait or engagement shoot with JPG? Wondering what to wear? This question comes up often when couples and families are preparing for their photo shoot with us. We’ve seen it all and have a few tips to help you with your portrait session style.

To begin with, we’re telling YOUR story, so wear what makes you feel like yourself. We’re not the kind of photograph studio to encourage you to dress your family like a Sears catalog in matching white t-shirts and blue jeans.

The camera loves bolds, solids, simple stripes and patterns. It’s generally a good idea to steer away from words, because you never know what those will mean 30 years down the road. White usually isn’t the best option either, especially if we’re shooting on a sunny day. If you’re unsure what to wear, it never hurts to stick with classic black.

Make yourself comfortable! A portrait session is probably not the day to don that brand-new outfit that you’ll realize doesn’t quite fit the way you thought it would, or doesn’t make you feel like YOU. We encourage you to look sharp, but if you’ll feel most comfortable in ripped jeans and a faded t-shirt, that’s what we want! Feel free to wear clothes that represent your personality.

You may also want to think about the “feel” you’d like to give to your photo shoot. If you’re having an engagement session, there are subtle ways to showcase your relationship. The same goes for families!

Keep in mind that the weather may not cooperate completely with your vision, but that won’t show in your pictures if you dress right. We’ve done summery, sunny shoots on chilly April days! Layers and a sweater may bring a warm, intimate feeling, while summery clothes give off a breezy, carefree feel.

As a general rule, at JPG, we’re up for just about anything. Thinking themes? Love Mad Men? We’d love to hear your ideas, and we want to tell YOUR story! Make sure to pin your favorite photo from this post!

Best,
Joe G.
