In February of last year, when we were first deciding on where we wanted to set up our new home base, we were immediately drawn to Manayunk, the historic Philadelphia neighborhood that’s famous for its daytime shopping and bustling nightlife. We knew that we would be surrounded by a renewed energy, led by some of the most creative people in the city. JPG Photography made it a goal to serve this community as it serves others, by helping highlight each strength through the diversity of generations, backgrounds, and interests. And, as we became photographers for Manayunk.com, we were able to see every side of what this district has to offer.
One of our recent events with the publication was their PLAY Manayunk spring fitness festival. Held at the Venice Island Performing Arts and Recreation Center, attendees started their day with a 1-mile run down Main Street, followed by multiple informational lectures, live music, healthy food truck offerings, and topped it off with a movie night. Kids were able to visit the recess area, where they could play games, make crafts, hop on the moon bounce, and even enjoy a sweet little petting zoo!
We were also grateful to join one of the best foodie events of the year – the Manayunk StrEAT Food Festival. Once a year, Main Street completely closes down and makes itself a home to over 50 food trucks, offering a variety of treats from BBQ to desserts. There were also a variety of shopping vendors selling their goods, some live musicians performing at several locations, and a Bud Light-sponsored beer garden! There was even a similar recess area for kids to take advantage of face painting, sidewalk chalk, and more!
The most recent event in our lovely little neighborhood showcased the creative arts and crafts from the local talent. The Manayunk Arts Festival entered into its 26th year (see our recent blog post!), hosted nearly 300 artists and close to 200,000 collectors, buyers and designers in total. One of the coolest features was the Emerging Artist Tent, which highlighted some of the local artists in order to help them create names for themselves. And we were there to capture it all!
When it comes to Manayunk, there are always activities to do and things to see. This summer’s opening lineup of events is already proving to be an exciting start to the summer season. And after seeing how their first annual Mummers Parade in February went, we can imagine some fun partying for people of all ages and backgrounds to take back to the streets!
Best, Joe G. and the JPG Photography Team
